Why is the inclusion of the detail of the paper on the floor important?
We were presented with the idea that everything an author includes in a book is in some way significant and important, otherwise it wouldn't be there. So, here the paper could be an object important to the plot, like a suicide note which the character stumbles across or a birth certificate of a unwanted baby kept secret, or it could just infer something about a character or a scene, for example that the character is a messy person or that the room isn't as it was before so something could be wrong.
